  • Rohit-led India lost the WTC final
  • Rohit will be 38 during the 2025 WTC Final
India's defeat in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) has put the spotlight on Rohit Sharma's captaincy in the longest format of the game. With a new WTC cycle on the cards, questions are being raised about whether Rohit can lead the national team for the next two years.
By the time the 2025 WTC final scheduled to take place at Lord's comes around, Rohit will be 38, which raises doubts over his future. However, there is no imminent threat to his captaincy, as the opening batter is set to lead the team in next month's two-match series against the West Indies.
However, a report by the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) states that Rohit's future beyond the West Indies series is doubtful. If the 36-year-old fails to fire with the bat in the two match-series set to begin on July 12, the selectors could be forced to take a call.
"These are baseless stuff that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question as he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
"As of now, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will have to take a call after the two Tests and look at his batting form," the source added.
With India not to play any Test cricket till December after the West Indies series and focus shifting purely to the 2023 World Cup, a decision is set to be taken before the team takes the flight to South Africa towards the end of the year.
"After West Indies, we have no Tests till December-end when the team travels to South Africa. So there is enough time for selectors to deliberate and take a decision. By then the fifth selector (new chairman) will also join the panel and a decision can be taken," the BCCI source stated
The same report by PTI also states that Rohit was not sure about taking over as Test captain after Virat Kohli's resignation in January 2022 due to fitness issues.
"The two top men at that time (former president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah) had to convince him to take up the role once KL Rahul failed to impress as a captain in South Africa," the BCCI source revealed.
Rohit has captained India in seven test matches so far, of which only one has come outside India. Rohit missed the one-off Test against England last year due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, while he skipped the Test series in Bangladesh due to a finger injury.
Under Rohit, India have won four Test matches, lost two, and drawn one. While the WTC final was the lowest moment of his short tenure, he led the team to victory in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) earlier this year
